The Man, the Myth, the Legend

My late husband, affectionately known as Al, lived a life filled with passion, purpose, and joy. He was an avid golfer who collected countless trophies, a man of deep faith who moved with me to Union Missionary Baptist Church in 2023, and someone who poured love into every hobby he embraced… from playing cards and strumming his guitar to cooking unforgettable meals and teaching karate. Above all, he cherished his family, especially his daughter and grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

After graduating from Hillside High School, Al enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968, serving bravely during the Vietnam War as part of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines. He rose to the rank of Sergeant, earned multiple medals, and received an honorable discharge before serving for 25 years as a Durham City firefighter. The bonds he formed there, his fire family, remained unbreakable. Al also touched countless lives by mentoring children, supporting families at school meetings, staying connected to his 1968 classmates, and helping anyone in need.

Al was the heart of our home and the inspiration behind this foundation. His kindness, compassion, devotion to family, and unwavering commitment to others continue to guide every step of this mission. Through this work, his legacy of service and love will live on… touching lives long after both of us are gone.

With love,
Gina
